Questions
How long does a watercolour pet portrait take?
Portraits are generated in under 60 seconds. Upload a photo, choose a style like Classic Wash or Botanical, and the AI paints your portrait almost instantly.
Which watercolour style should I choose?
Classic Wash is the most timeless and suits any room. Colour Splash is bold and modern. Botanical frames your pet with flowers. Line & Wash has a sketchbook feel. Soft & Pale is gentle and muted, and works well in a nursery or bedroom.
What kind of pet photo works best?
A clear, well-lit photo where your pet's face is visible works best. Watercolour keeps detail around the eyes and nose, so a sharp face gives the strongest result.
Can I get my watercolour portrait printed?
Yes. PetMax prints giclee on 200gsm enhanced matte paper in two sizes (8×10" and 16×20"). The matte stock suits watercolour particularly well.
About the Watercolour style
Watercolour is the most forgiving and the most unforgiving of painting mediums. Pigment is suspended in water and laid over paper in transparent layers, so the white of the paper does the work of the highlights and every stroke stays visible underneath the next. A painting is built by deciding what to leave out: the places where colour is allowed to bloom and run, and the places where the paper is left bare.
It suits animals particularly well. Fur reads beautifully as a soft edge dissolving into paper, while a few darker strokes around the eyes and nose are enough to bring the whole face into focus. The result feels affectionate rather than formal, which is why watercolour has long been the most requested medium for pet portraits.
Each PetMax portrait is generated by an AI image model guided by a prompt written for watercolour, reproducing wet-on-wet blooms, granulating pigment and untouched paper at a resolution suitable for large prints. Each style changes what surrounds your pet, from a bare-paper study to loose botanicals, while their markings and colouring stay faithful to your photo.
